Curated by Justina Martino, Silent Symphony transforms the main gallery into a visual concert hall. This abstract exhibition featured a collection of paintings, mixed media collages, reliefs, and stained glass hangings by Sacramento-based artists Joha Harrison, Meg Myers, and Henry Parada. Without a single sound, the artworks conjure the rhythms and harmonies of music.
Drawing on the concept of the “musicality of color”—a term referring to the emotional and perceptual connections between music and color—this exhibition explores how hues of varying saturation, temperature, and value mingle with resonant textures, harmonious shapes, and rhythmic lines. The result is a collection of artworks you can get lost in, just like your favorite song. Listen with your eyes and experience the visual melodies composed entirely in these stunning works of art.
THE VOID: ਕੋਇਲ (KOEL)
The Void hosted ਕੋਇਲ (Koel), a solo exhibition by artist Sunroop Kaur. A captivating darkscape, ਕੋਇਲ is an entanglement of light and surface texture using 24k gold leaf, oil painting, and a site-responsive installation. Kaur’s devotional practice pursues illumination through the intersection of classical forms, such as Byzantine Art and Indian Miniature. Her material vocabulary speaks to internal landscapes of complicated familial relationships and points of rupture and repair.
The exhibition title, which translates to “koel,” or “cuckoo bird,” is inspired by the Asian Koel, known for its beautiful call. The artist positions the koel as a dream-keeper gilded onto the surface of lived memory.
